Solar Panel System Security Measures

Investing in a series of photovoltaic panels can be expensive. Some people with ill intent may be driven to steal solar panels and resell them for a profit. Use the following tips to keep your new solar panel system protected.

Your Insurance Policy

If you have chosen to insure your solar panel system, the insurance coverage may protect against damage and theft that is no fault of your own. Review your policy. The coverage will be dependent upon the actual condition of the panels at the time that they were installed. Avoid modifying the solar panels, since this may void your insurance coverage.

Torx Security Fasteners

Some manufacturers of solar panel products sell hardware materials that are designed to deter theft. Torx screws can be used to add a layer of protection to your solar panel system. Torx hardware cannot be removed with a standard screwdriver.

The head of a Torx screw contains six slots that form a star shape. In order to remove a Torx screw, a Torx screwdriver will be needed. If standard hardware was used when the solar panel setup was installed, contact the installation company that performed the job. Request that the original hardware is swapped out with security screws.

Security Devices

Motion detectors and surveillance cameras can be connected to your home security system. These security devices will alert you to any instances in which someone is approaching your home or attempting to climb up onto the rooftop. Motion detectors can be installed at ground level or along the sides of the roof. Surveillance equipment should be placed strategically, recording any action that takes place on your property.

A security team can guide you in choosing the locations for the new equipment that will be added to your property and home. After the new security equipment that you have invested in has been installed, request that the security team connects the equipment to your home security system. If you have access to a system that is connected to the internet, you will be alerted in real time if movement has been detected near the solar panel system.

Signage

In addition to using the above security measures, post signage in your yard that will alert intruders. Displaying signage that specifies that your home and property are being monitored may deter a trespasser from attempting to steal the new solar panel products that are on the rooftop.
